The speech therapist is a Health and Education professional, responsible for health promotion, prevention, assessment and diagnosis, counseling, treatment (habilitation and rehabilitation), and improvement of speech-language aspects of peripheral and central auditory function, vestibular function, oral and written language, voice, fluency, speech articulation and myofunctional, orofacial, and cervical systems and swallowing. The physical therapist also conducts teaching, research and administrative activities.

The Speech-language-therapy and Audilolgy Course at FMRP

The course, with 30 vacancies annually offers, in four years’ duration, a training that includes capacity for the scientific research, for the promotion of health and prevention of human communication disorders, for the evaluation and diagnosis of the speech therapy, as well as for the planning and conduction of clinical and therapeutic processes and rehabilitation in primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

The multidisciplinary aspect since the beginning of the undergraduate course aims to the training of a professional able to interact in multidisciplinary teams, working with quality, efficiency and resolution in the Unified Health System (SUS).

The practice scenarios (Internships) include acting in the Family Health Centers, linked to the School Health Center (CSE) of the FMRP-USP and municipal schools in the Western District of Ribeirão Preto. These facilities have the primary goal of promoting the health of the local community.

The clinical-therapeutic care (Secondary Care) is conducted in the school clinic of the course, established in the contiguous area to the State Hospital in Ribeirão Preto that integrates assistance provided by other courses of FMRP.

Besides this area, the development of clinical practices in the area of Orofacial Motricity is conducted at the School of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto (FORP).

The practice in the Tertiary Level is conducted at the hospital of HCFMRP-USP, and in the several outpatient services and facilities that compose it.

In the Audiology area, procedures of audiological investigation, selection, indication and adaptation of individual hearing aids are performed and the clinical performance in the process of assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of vestibular and auditory systems.

The high complexity performance is developed in Hearing Health programs – APAC and Cochlear Implant Program, which occur in the integrated services of Otolaryngology and Speech Therapy.

The student of Speech Therapy at FMRP has a broad training with internships and performance at all levels of health care and Speech Therapy areas (hearing, speech, language, orofacial motricity and collective health). The total workload of the course covers 4,140 hours, 1,050 hours of professional supervised practice.
