What is the profession?
Occupational therapy is a field of knowledge and intervention in health, education and social sphere, gathering technologies for the emancipation and empowerment of people who, for reasons linked to specific problems, physical, sensory, mental, psychological and/or social problems have temporarily or permanently difficulty in integration and participation in social life (FMUSP, 1997).
Occupational therapy uses as a working tool the ACTIVITY, whose meaning is the ‘doing’ (occupation) of the man in their daily lives and in their relationships with the environment.
The intervention of the occupational therapist is done through activities as therapeutic resource, previously analyzed, according to the need of each individual or group (therapy workshops, vocational, educational, humanization groups, etc.).

The Occupational Therapy Course at FMRP-USP
It was implemented in 2002 and it is divided into 5 years, during Evening/Night. The classes in the first and second years start at 4:30 pm; and in the third and fourth years is full time.
The first group to graduate was in 2006. It is offered 20 vacancies annually. The course in Occupational Therapy train the professional qualified to understand the aspects of bio-psycho-socio-cultural of man and use various forms of human activity, such as theater, music, dance, arts, crafts, games and toys, professional work and self-care, besides specific techniques such as prescription and design of assistive technology, in order to maintain, promote and recovery health.
The course prepares the professional, through the relationship between therapist, patient and activity; help the individual to find the most rewarding ways of life, either in small groups or in society.
The course develops theoretical and practical activities that aim to develop new knowledge built in the teacher/student relationship, through teaching, research and extension activities.
The first step takes place in the first two years and has common structure with other undergraduate courses facing Human Health. The disciplines of this cycle present the content (theoretical and practical) of molecular basis and normal and abnormal cellular processes, structure and function of tissues, organs, systems. The content also includes the understanding of the social, cultural, economic determinants, behavioral, psychological, ethical and legal developments, and communication at the individual and collective levels, the disease process, and knowledge of the activities and therapeutic resources, as well as historical, philosophical and methodological principles of Occupational Therapy.
In the 3rd and 4th years the specific theoretical and practical disciplines prevail aiming at the teaching of occupational therapy techniques in which the student learns to use the occupational therapy reasoning to relate the specific problems of the population with which it will work. In the last year the student will develop professional internships activities at different levels of health care, such as protection programs, promotion, restoration of health or promotion programs and social inclusion, education, habilitation and rehabilitation in the different social and health equipment, in General Hospital, in basic health facilities, communities, institutions, reference centers, rehabilitation centers, cooperatives, workshops, companies, among others.
