What is Medicine?
According to Aurélio dictionary, MEDICINE is the art and science of preventing or curing disease, or palliating its effects. This concept is extended by Houaiss in another famous dictionary, which considers MEDICINE as the set of knowledge related to the maintenance of health as prevention, treatment, and cure of diseases, traumas and disorders, being considered for some a technique and for others a science. Considering the concept extended for health, which is the physical, psychological and social comfort, the current medicine is committed to the humanization of services and integral assistance to citizens.
1. The professional
Technically, the physician can be defined as the human being personally able, technically qualified and legally authorized to act in the society as the professional of Medicine – which ensures the right to perform all actions the law allows or requires (CFM).
2. Work Fields
The medical activity is involved with all health aspects, considering the diagnosis and treatment of sick people, as well as the prevention, maintenance and health rehabilitation. A physician can perform these activities in public health system, in health insurance, private practice, private companies and industries or research centers and higher education as Universities.
3. Medicine at FMRP-USP
The School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto-USP, which admits 100 students annually, in a six year full-time course, turned 60 in May, 2012. During these years the School has built a renowned center of professional train in health, with more than 4,598 undergraduate physicians. It is also a graduate school with MSc and PhD, with 19 majors and more than 1,451 students enrolled, and Medical Residency with 38 different programs in which are distributed 618 physicians, and 25 improvement programs for 90 professionals from other health areas.
The profile of the medical professional the institution expects to train is composed of a professional with knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes essential for the suitable exercise of the profession, as well as ethical attitude and ability to deal with the cultural, social and economic distinction of groups and individuals. Therefore, FMRP-USP aims to train a professional who knows how to understand and intermediate in the social reality of the country, in the prospect of the medical practice.
Learning and qualification for professional practice are performed in various scenarios within and outside Ribeirão Preto Campus, with equipped classrooms and modern teaching equipment, large anatomy, microscopy, biochemistry, pathology laboratories. The primary care is carried out in health facilities linked to USP and the complex cases are assisted in the Maternity “Mater”, School Health Center and at Ribeirão Preto State Hospital. The General Hospital, responsible for the tertiary level, counts on 525 beds representing the largest public hospital in the state of São Paulo, in which 2,500 visits are daily performed, 80 surgeries, 90 admissions, 7,000 laboratory tests and 200 blood transfusions. The urgencies and emergencies in the region, within the Unified Health System (SUS), are assisted at the Emergency Facility, representing 120 patients daily.
Undergraduate students at FMRP-USP have a wide network of personal support, which includes transportation services, food, computing resources, an extensive collection of books and periodicals in the Central Library, scholarship program for scientific initiation, programs of support for attendance at events in Brazil and abroad, health care, as well as opportunities to participate in sports and cultural activities. Students with disabilities may also have accommodation or housing allowance and request other types of social assistance.
The School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto-USP has a Center for Psychological and Educational Support – CAEP that offers psychological and educational counseling for students with initial difficulties in adapting to a new physical and social environment, and assistance on issues facing vocational doubts. The university is an environment of educational innovations and pioneering in the development of techniques and research, consisting of suitable infrastructure, qualified faculty, and motivated students with learning and also involved in political, social and humanistic activities. All these factors complement the train of the medical student at the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto-USP.
What are the objectives of Medicine training at FMRP?
The course at FMRP aims to establish a relationship with patients in order to recognize them as a physical, mental and social unit and act according to the law and the professional ethics, aiming at a humanistic education, in which the professional should recognize health as a state of physical, mental and social well being and dependent on favorable environmental conditions and apply correctly and systematically the routine procedures that lead to the diagnosis and interpret in an accurate way the data obtained. The professional should indicate and perform properly, non specialized therapeutic measures for the most prevalent diseases in the country, as well as the states that put life in imminent risk, thus contributing to health promotion and disease prevention. It is expected that the professional recognizes the position that will occupy in the health system of the country and assess, with a critical sense, how this system operates in solving the health problems of the Brazilian population. It is also expected the professional acquire, continuously, relevant information for medical practice, in order to ensure the professional development through the use of learning resources and critical analysis of scientific paper, contributing to the advancement of knowledge, performing original observations, systematizing the personal experience and reporting them appropriately to the medical community.
